Neighbourhood News -Spring 2009 - Issue 37 |
Over three years ago your Association kindly published an article about the Police Choir in its Newsletter. As a result we had three new members, who are now very much involved and enjoying the Choir.
DECEMBER POLICING UPDATE
Locally, Christmas and New Year were peaceful.
Significant arrests
As a result of community intelligence a local youth, with a large knife, was arrested. He was charged under new guidelines. Thankfully, knife crime is rare locally.
Another repeat offender admitted stealing petrol from local service stations on 33 occasions. Excellent investigation by our police staff investigators.
Performance
Wheelie bins continue to go "missing". Over a hundred so far this year! Please let us know if you can help us solve the mystery.
Is CCTV useful ? So far this year it has led to 427 arrests from our 37 cameras; 21 in the town.
Customer service
All callers who report anti-social behaviour or criminal damage now get a follow up call at least or a visit from their Safer Neighbourhood Team. Not happening? Let me know!
Local priorities being tackled
Speeding is a major concern for residents in the Western Wards. Police and Neighbourhood Watch recently ran a joint operation with our new mobile speeding sign. All data from the speed sign is passed to the Roads- Policing Unit who then issue tickets to speeders. Tony Day (Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator- Swanwick) assisted PCSO Barlow and PCSO Brierley around the Swanwick area using the Speed Sign to deter speeders along Swanwick Lane. Other sites in and around the area are also regularly visited including Lockswood Road, Warsash Road, Primate Road and Hunts Pond Road.
Gull Coppice parking issues - Park Gate West Police recently "blitzed" the area. We are looking to obtain a local council order to get a pathway approved from the school to Rookery and also bollards and double yellow lines put in place for a long term solution.
Truancy patrols in December. 31 students were spoken to:
2 returned to school, 3 from out of area, 10 homes were visited, 6 'sick' but shopping (funny that!), 10 valid reasons.
Charles Seddon, a local builder carried out work on a conservatory and then took the rubbish home with him. The waste, including wooden pallets, two doors, window frames and broken glass, was then found dumped at Newlands Farm in Tanners Lane, Fareham, on March 28 this year. During a police interview Seddon admitted transporting the rubbish from the site to his home in Posbrook Lane, Titchfield, without a licence. At Fareham Magistrates' Court Seddon admitted three charges, and has been ordered to pay a total of £2,420. Great investigation by the FBC Enforcement Team.

Miscellaneous
There is an increasing trend for young people to"threaten" each other via social networking sites, e.g. a Bebo MSN account has been used to send racially abusive messages to a 12yr old girl. Help us prevent this.
The Portchester schools now have PC Andy Higgs in post as their Safer Schools Partnership constable. We are convinced early intervention and joint agency action will work even better!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2009

Please come, support the meeting and perhaps bring friends and neighbours. Everyone welcome.
ON THE BEAT
With
The Hampsire Male Voice Police Choir
STILL LOOKING FOR WOULD-BE PAVAROTTI'S TO JOIN THE HAMPSHIRE POLICE CHOIR
But we could still do with some more members! Perhaps the time is right for you to join ? You may have been inspired by the recent TV show 'the Last Choir Standing', you may have just retired with time to take on new interests, or you want a new challenge.
Whatever the reason please come along and try it.
Being a member of Neighbourhood Watch you will be aware of what is going on in your community, but did you know that the Hampshire Police Choir practices on 'your beat' ?
The Choir, formerly known as the Portsmouth City Police Choir, was formed in 1940 and has raised thousands of pounds for charities and local causes. Most of its performances are in Hampshire, about 8 concerts a year, including Police Families Day at Netley. We will be performing with the Police Band at Ferneham Hall on 3rd October, so if you joined now you could be taking part on your own beat! The Choir have also enjoyed singing in Cornwall, Wales and abroad, including France, Germany, Jersey, Croatia and Malta. It has also sung in prestigious massed choirs at the Albert Hall, Cardiff Alms Park and London Hyde Park. In October last year the Choir took part in the London Welsh Festival of Male Voices. It was an awesome experience.
The Choir was originally made up of police officers and support staff but now includes members of the community. You don't have to be a "Pavarotti" or be able to sight-read. New members are given a 'voice assessment' to make sure you can keep in tune and assess which section suits your voice. It is not as daunting as it sounds. You can choose your own music and it is done at the end of the practice, so you are not in the spotlight. We have an excellent Music Team to help you improve your singing, and who knows, you could be the next Pavarotti!
Being a member of the Police Choir is very satisfying and great fun, singing a wide range of music. I have been a member for 42 years so it must be good ! Why not come along to a practice night and see how good it really is ? You won't have to travel far, the Choir practices at the Parish Rooms, Barnes Lane, Sarisbury Green from 7pm to 9.30pm on Wednesday evenings.
If you would like further information, please contact the Chairman, Brian Wareham on 07771 724421 or brian@beware.me.uk, or Vice Chairman, Geoff Culbertson on 07971 783660.

Fareham Town Center Unit
In the run up to Christmas , the New Year and into 2009, I would like to make you aware of the dedicated Fareham Town Centre Unit and what they are currently doing to ensure Fareham Town Centre is a safe environment for its residents and visitors.
The Town Centre Unit is run by Sergeant Kerry Rudge assisted by PC Les Seal, PC Graham Harris, PC Ajay Williams, PC Emily Gregg, PCSO Donna Bidle, PCSO Graham Stanton and PCSO Bob Shailer.
There is a Shopwatch scheme within the Shopping Centre and, at present, 20 people are banned from entering for at least 12 months. There is also a radio link scheme with over 40 members. The radio enables the members to liaise directly with the Police, Fareham Shopping Centre Security, CCTV Control Room and other radio link members. It is an excellent means of communication for the town centre, enabling all members to be aware of what is happening, as it's happening.
Police are tackling purse thefts and, in the main, it is elderly people that are being targeted. The people committing this type of crime normally work in pairs and approach their victim, standing particularly close to them or bumping into them and then apologising. These are organised criminals and the victim will often not realise their purse is missing until they next go to use it.
Police have handed out hundreds of lanyards free of charge to elderly shoppers in recent weeks. These are lengths of cord that clip to a bag and purse enabling the purse to be taken out for use but preventing the possibility of it being snatched.
Sergeant Rudge urges shoppers to keep their purses in a secure bag out of view and not to leave the bag unzipped or on trolleys, mobility scooters and pushchairs.
The Town Centre Unit have also recently carried out a number of plain clothes operations in relation to purse thefts and drug use within the Town Centre. A number of arrests have been made over recent weeks and convictions secured at Court.
Finally, we had a review of how the team was doing this year compared to last year:-
It looks like we are winning!

NHW STREET SIGNS
Are the lamp-posts in your road being replaced ?
If so - please ask the contractors to put the NHW sign back on the new post. These signs do belong to you, the scheme members, and will cost about £30 to buy new again.
However, if the sign just looks tired and sad a new overlay may be the answer. These self-adhesive plastic overlays (which will cover faded paint and have an expected life of about 7 years) cost £3.75 each.
So, if you want to smarten up your signs very inexpensively, let us know in the office by calling 0845 045 4545 ext 641267 - and leave a clear message with contact details on the answerphone and someone will get back to you.

New NAV-MATMore and more of us have sat. nav. in our car these days, but unfortunately the tell-tale "ring mark" left on windscreens, when we park up and hide it away, makes us a target for thieves. Nav-Mat solves that problem - simply sit it on your dashboard and nestle your sat nav inside and there will be no mark on your screen to detect. Our buying team have tested the Nav-Mat's dashboard gripping qualities - so you can be assured it stays on ! Fits most brands of sat nav. Also good for MP3 players or a phone.Licensed by the Association of Chief Police Officers. 18cm (7 in) diameter. (Sat. nav. not included) Ref 41329 £17.99 Available from 01539 488100 for Orders or www.lakeland.co.uk This product may also be available from other retailers. |
CAR THEFTS
In the last newsletter I mentioned some instances where occupied houses had been burgled during the night where offenders were looking for car keys with the intention of stealing a vehicle from the driveway. Since the last newsletter there have been more incidents in our area where offenders have targeted properties where there are Audis, Porche, BMW, Maserati and Golf GTI. Any other prestige cars are also likely to be taken. Offenders will sometimes fish keys through the letter box if they are left on a hall table. Be extra vigilant if you own such a vehicle. TW Many thanks to Crime Reduction Officer Tony Walters for help and advice throughout the year |
